WOMEN'S ECONOMIC POSITION.

The biggest single factor, probably; in making the complexion of modem life so completely different from epochs that went before is the increasing economic independence of women. Everyone is, of course, vaguely aware of the large numbers of women earning their own living, but/ew know the figures. .Not many are aware of the high percentage" of all women engaged in money-earning work (states a writer in ' the San Francisco "Examiner.") ' There arc in the United States, for example, 8,549,399 working 7 women. These constitute 21.1 per cent, of all the women in the State. The people of San Francisco are going to have a graphic lesson in. the economic independence of women in the Industrial Exposition parade to be held shortly. -It has been estimated, more or loss correctly,'that over ' 30,000 women in San Francisco work at money-earning occupations. Not all of these, of course, are able to leave their occupations for a* parade, but many thousands- of them are. These will appear in that procession which is to depict the industries of California. It will be something worth while seeing, that women's section. ' , . There will bo meat for thought in it. It will explain many things to folks who seek reasons for things.

, It will explain for example, the .growing self-sufficiency of women, their unreadiness to suffer the difficulties in married life which come to women who are utterly dependent. It will explain/the increasing lateness of the age at which Women marry. It will explain the participation of women in the real issues, of politics. That sectior of the parade will do a lot of good. It will teach us many things. It will be well worth while watching and thinking about.
