SOME GIANT FAT SEASTS.
BIRMINGHAM CATTLE SHOW
One of the 'chief features of Birmingham's seventieth animal Fat Stock Show at liingley Hall was the second triumph of Blue Bill, the beautifullyfinished blue-grey crossbred steer which won the Norwich blue riband for Sir Richard Cooper a week "previously. - OVER A TON. -The champion's weight was 15cwt 3qr 241 b, but he was small- compared with .some of the "animals 4n the butchers' classes, and those entered lor the. cup for the heaviest beast in the show, wherein weight and nothingelse counts. This cup was gained by a four-years-old roan named Rainbow, shown by Mr Samuel Beachell, of Beswick Hall,. Beverley, Yorkshire, which scaled 1 ton 3cwt 81b.,
Another giant, a red Devon named Jumbo, sent by Mr H. G. Hodges, of | the Manor/Long Marston, Stratford- i on-Avon, weighed only, a few pounds.' less, while Lady Uenrhyn showed a Shorthorn scaling more than a ton. In all eight animals exceeded 18cwt. The King's three exhibits—two ( Herefords and a Shorthorn—although of great merit, were not good enough for the prize list. Warwickshire farmers sent many fine representatives of the picturesque Longhorn breed, with their great span of horns frequently exceeding 4ft. In the cow class of this breed the first prize wniner was only a month short of eight years, which seems old for a beef animal.
Although the sheep were few,~their quality, especially that of the fat lambs, was exceptional. The three champion lambs, Hampshire Downs, were again Major Morrison's, and their weight at 11 months was well over a quarter of a ton. Their closest competitors were Mrs W. F. Inge's (Tamwortli) pen of Shropshires, scaling over 4cwt at eight months.
