ALLEGED FALSE PRETENCES.
A LEVIN CASE. The arrest wa<s made at Mokau in the North Taranaki district a few days ago, of a man named Harold Avery Clayton, alias Patrick McKibbon, David Law, Rex Hugh McLeod, David YVhitham, Dr. Thacker, Dr. Clayton. The accused, who had set up in Levin recently as a veterinary surgeon, but left shortly after New Year, was charged before Mr H. R. Cattley, J.P., with obtaining credit at Levin to the value of £5 by fraud on January 3 from William Malcey, a taxi-proprietor, and, secondly, that at Mokau, on January 6, with intent to defraud, he obtained the sum of £1 in money from David Edward Scott by means of a false pretence, representing himself to be assistant engineer to Mr R. B. Townley, of the Public Works Department, Awakino. Detective-Sergeant Cooney, on behalf of the police, asked for a remand until Friday, the 12th inst., and this was accordingly granted. REMANDED AT PALMERSTON. The accused Clayton appeared at the Magistrate’s Court at Palmerston North this morning on the charge of false pretences at Levin on January 3.
On the application of Detective Holmes, a remand was granted till tomorrow morning, when the charge will be proceeded with. The police stated that two further charges would also be preferred 1 against accused to-morrow.
