A POLL TO BE TAKEN
A special meeting of the Council was held last week to go into details in connection with the rating for the water supply. Mr Bovis reported at Tuesday night's meeting of the Council that, from inquiries he had made in referenced the special rate, that as the assessments appeared on the valuation roll so they must be rated, but the owners had the right to apply to the Valuation Department for an adjustment for rating purposes. The rate was always struck over the borough for the security oi tile loan, but from inquiries made it. Had never yet been found necessary to collect the. rate. Up to the present he had not been able to obtain complete particulars, but hoped to have them in the course of a day or two. The Mayor said the Council would have to apply to have the assessment made by the Valuation Department. By-laws would have to be made to cope with it. The Engineer (Mr Edwards) said according to the Act, the Council could claim half rate if they required ti. it was then decided, on the motion of Cr. Hyde, seconded by the Mayor, that, the Council proceed to take a poll of the ratepayers for the proposed scheme as early as possible.
