The Levin High School eleven will visit Shannon to-morrow and play the Shannon School for. the O’Connor Primary Schools’ Gup. Mr O’Connor, the donor of the cup, will be present to witness .the match.
The senior cup fixtures for to-mor-row are: Public Works ,v. Weraroa at Shannon, and Y.M.CTA. v. Foxton at i/evin; Shannon has the bye.
A proposal is in train for the formation of a B team in connection with the Weraroa Club with the idea of playing the team with the bye each week in the -senior competition. If it can be got. going the team should fill a useful purpose and provide a. game for all members of the club.
Y.M.C.A. did well to beat Public Works after the latter had put 114 together. Although giving two or three chances, Doidge played a useful bat for 47, and showed some nice strokes. Hemingsen has not forgotten how,; and his 26 was a good effort, Mackenzie’s 55 was the outstanding feature: of the Y.M.C.A.’s win. He steadied up the side when things were looking blue, and pulled the match out of the fire.
With five for 33, Field put up the best performance with the ball for Y.M.Ci.A. \Tingey also bowled well, three for 17 falling to l his lot —a good
record. The inclusion of Hemingsen was a source of strength to the Works team on Saturday, and besides batting well secured three wickets for 28. Auckram, of Y.M.G.A., put up a somewhat similar performance. After taking two wickets for 31, he contributed 23 (not out) with the bat. Shannon fairly outclassed Foxton on Saturday, the seaside team making a very poor show, the wickets falling like ninepins to the bowling of Grainger and Harris. The genial Shannon skipper got six for eight runs, including the hat trick. Stewart 31 and Hunt 25, both not out, made more than enough to give Shannon a win by .eight, wickets. The Manawatu Association has , agreed to thei Horowhenua Sub-Asso-ciation’s proposal to provide a wicket: in Palmerston for a game between the: Horowhenua and Tararua districts. The match will be played on January 22.
O’Connor will make his first- appearance this season for Weraro» against the Public Works on SaturdaySloan, who had his hand injured, will also play his first match.
The Horowhenua Association has not yet made the fixtures for the Southern competition, and it' would be Avell to have these made as as possible. Randall Avas unable to play for Shannon on Saturday last owing to illness. Shannon is having more than a fair share of bad luck this season from illness and accidents to its members.
Shannon is the first club to com--pletei the first, round, coming out with a record of two Avins and two losses.. Foxtoh, Y.M.C.A., Public Works and! Weraroa. will play their final matchesin the first round on Saturday. The Levin High School team whiclii Avill go in pursuit of the O’Connor Cup on Saturday is a fairly solid side, and! may be relied on to give a good ac-> count of itself. The boys receive plenty of good coaching from tb'eir master, Mr Casey, whose interest in the boys is commendable.
