DAIRY PRODUCE NOTES.
Brookside Colantha, an eight-year-old cow, owned by the Hache Herd, of Worthing, Sussex, promises to make history. She has had' five calves, and her yields with each of the .first four are as follows: —
1,069 gallons in 297 days 1,449 gallons in 361 days 1,644 gallons in 364 days 2,368 gallons in 365 days
Calving with her fifth on 18th November, 1921, she started milking again at an exceptional rate, and for the first six months of lactation averaged over 10 gallons daily. Now, after 271 milking days, she has given no less
than 2,517 gallons of milk, and is Still producing 8 gallons per day, so that in all probability she will break the British lactation record, at present held by Mr E. E. Debenham’s Shorthorn cow Cowslip. - Colantha is, as one would ex pect to find, an exceptionally large framed matron, and after all her hard work looks in wonderful condition, this being due in no small degree to the care of her devoted attendant, Mr Walter Sutton, and his assistants. Like many other high producers, Brookside ; Colantha is descended from the Hedges >. herd of Messrs A. and J. Brown, as her sire was Hedges Recorder, a bull registered in the second volume of the society’s Herd Book.
Although it seems likely that Colantha will soon break the British lactation record, she is not the highest daily producer, this honour belonging to Mr ‘ George T. Eaton’s cow Eastfield Blackberry, with a yield of 123ilbs. in one day. The greatest daily production attained by the Hache Herd’s great cow was 119ilbs. in 24 hours, but her ability to maintain an average yield of over 951bs/per day for nine months .has, it is thought, never before been equalled in England.A notable test ha 9 just been concluded with a two-year-old Friesian heifer
owned by Mr J. Grigg, of Ashburton. The heifer, Longbeach Clematis, by Longbeach' Flower, is entered for the New Zealand £SOO Derby. She calved at two years of age, and in 365 days produced 15,8511bs of milk and 700,42 lbs of butter-fat. This is a record for all '> breeds in Canterbury, and the record for a heifer of her age in the South Island. A satisfactory feature of the record from Mr Grigg’s standpoint is that the heifer is a direct descendant of the original importations made bv him from Holland in 1884, the first' of the now-popular “black and whites’ 5 to be brought to this country.
