NOTES ON THE GAME.
The first match for the O’Connor Primary Schools Cup will take place at Shannon to-morrow between the Shannon School (holders) and Levin School (challengers). The senior competition matches tomorrow are Y.M.C.A. y. Public Works at Shannon, and Foxton v. Shannon at Foxton. Weraroa has the bye.
The Public Works team showed something like form against Foxton, and it will be interesting to see how they shape in their future games. Newth, of .Public Works, seems to be bowling in his old form, and accounted for five of the Foxton wickets at a cost of 44 runs. Mason (three for 15) got the best average of the other bowlers.
Six of the Public Works team got into double figures with the bat. Burrows was in aggressive form, and had the good score of 49 to his credit when he had the bad luck to (hit his wicket. Pope 22, Mason 29, Doidge 16 ; Bishop 13 and P.. Morgan 12 (not out) added useful scores. The batting indicates! that the Works will have a-solid sidewhen properly in form. Although he made a good score for Foxton against Weraroa,. Reay . failed with the bat against Public Works. Harini and T. Morgan made the best stand for Foxton. and contributed, more than half the total score between ! them.
Reay, with two for 21, was the best of the Foxton bowlers. He should prove the best all-round player for the team before the season is over.
With, the exception of Clardige and McGill, Weraroa failed with the hat against Shannon. The pace of the wicket probably had something to do with it. Cl arid ge has been a consistent rungetter for Weraroa this season, and lias got into double vgures in the three matches played.
McGill promises to be a. strong addition to the Weraroa side, Besides shaping well with the bat, his bowling was good. Pringle, however, put .up the better performance with, the ball., Towards the end of the game Pringle and and McGill were well on the -wicket, and turned what looked • like defeat into a. win; by a narrow margin. Young Hunt gave the best-display for Shannon with the bat, and his score of 24 was a good one. He has a liking for leg shots, and got in several nice strokes.
Grainger and Randall just reached double'figures when they received ’heir quietus. These two players were the most successful of the Shannon bowlers.
