NEW BUSINESS PREMISES.

A valuable acquisition to the. business premises of Shannon is the fine'

two-storey brick building erected to the order of Mr P, Gill in Ballance Street. The contractors have now handed the building over to the owner. This building, as” " a commercial structure, is a decided advance ,on previous buildings bn this coast. The ou?W walls, are of 14in by 9in brickwork strengthened with concrete bands and supported by a concrete! foundation. The ground floor is of concrete, while the first- floor is of v-'ood, all supported* by. heavy woodwork resting on concrete pillars. The front brickwork is supported with a heavy reinforced concrete beam, the height from the finial to the floor being 37ft. The building has a very imposing appearance, the style of architecture being mediaeval, the vertical front margins being 16 by 6 concrete piers surmounted with Gothic caps, the large mullion windows being surmounted by handsome pediments formed with fancy moulded brick-work, while the tympanums are filled with glazed bricks. The finial is finished in a similar manner. The effect of the coloured moulded brickwork in the string-courses and other projection is very pleasing, ‘ and gives a very artistic effect in the finish of the front. Under the large plate-glass windows the dwarf walls are finished with moss-green glazed artistic tiles, the front being shaded with a very large verandah covering the footpath. The building is lighted with large steel windows along the side walls. The whole building has been wired in readiness for electricity when available. The two main apartments are 60ft by 30ft each. The contractor was Mr W. Mouldey, of Palmerston North, while the sub-contrac-tors were: Electrician, Mr WoollerJuan; plumbing, Mr Watsoii; painting and decorating, Mr Turner, all of Palmerston; Messrs. Hyde and Boyd, of Shannon, supplied the joinery work. The architect was Mr R, Edwards, F.N.Z.1.A., of Palmerston North.
