SHANNON BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The usual fortnightly meeting of the Borough Council was held on Tuesday evening. Present: His Worship the Mayor (Mr Murdoch) and Grs. Gardner, Spencer, Butt, Hyde, Richardson, Fargher, Hook and Murray. CORRESPONDENCE. From, the South British Insurance Co., Ltd,, re employers’ indemnity in respect to accident to employees, informing the Council that to meet a general demand for greater protection against claims at common law, it has been decided to increase the present maximum of £BOO inclusive of costi to £IOO without payment of any additional premium, and £2OOO upon payment of an additional premium of 5 per cent of present premium.—R’esolved that the Town Clerk write company and inquire what 5 per cent on present premium means. From Chamber of Commerce, Palmerston North, re expenses of Foxton Shipping Committee, stating they wereusable to give definite information as to amount at present.—Received. TENDERS FOR DOG COLLARS.
The tender of Mr Reed, Petone, for the supply of dog collars for the coming year was accepted. IMPROVING THE FOOTPATH. The Mayor said that, in reference to. the £3 granted to Mr P. Gill towards the cost of asphalting the footpath in front of his new premises in Ballance Street if he did'the work himself, Mr Gill had informed him that if the Council would do the work he would give £3 towards it, Mr Roach also agreeing to give a similar amount to have the work extended in front of his property. Cr. Butt inquired if the owners on each side of these two properties would do the same, so that the Council could make a decent job of it.
The- Mayor said he had approached them, but one party did not seem inclined to.
Cr. Murray then moved that the Roads Committee interview Messrs. Carter and Watterston and inform them: the work was being done and inquire if they would be agreeable to 1 come in on those terms.
MISCHIEF AT BRIDGE. ; The Mayor informed the Council it had been reported to him that the wires on the bridge at Curran’s had again been cut.—The roadman stated ( he had repaired it, this being the ( fourth occasion. It was decided that steps he taken to prevent a recurrence. /
STONES AT STATION. Cr. Murray brought up the question of the stones deposited- on the road by the station. He said he understood the opinion from the Borough solicitor was to the effect that the Council could place the stones on the side of the road in view of public work. But it, looked to him as if they had taken
up a permanency there. He thought if nothing was to Be done, with them they should be removed. The Mayor said they would be attended to. Accounts totalling £55 14/4 were passed for payment.
