THE SOLDIER MEMORIAL.

TIME SOMETHING WAS DONE. At Tuesday’s meeting of the Shannon Borough Council, Cr. Hyde brought up the matter of the Soldiers’ Memorial, and said it was becoming a scandal. No one seemed to be moving in the matter at all, and he thought it was time the Council got busy and did something. He understood .the Mayor had. been, authorised, to. hire a. car and wait on the farmers and others with a view to seeing what amount he could collect. He ' asked what amount was in hand.

The Mayor said there was £66 in the hank and another £‘24 "had been promised. Cr. Hyde: It is no use keeping the money in the bank. The matter has been hung up so long that something in keeping with the money in hand must be done.

Cr. Murray suggested a nice arch over the gateway into the railway station.

Cr. Fargher: Have something similar erected at the School and I will support you.

Cr. Murray thought if erected at the station it would be more suitable and help to beautify the town. Cr. Butt agreed that the School was the most suitable, as the memorial would always then be before the rising generation. Cr. Fargher strongly supported the school proposition, and 'Considered the work should be gone on with at once. Cr. Hyde said the original scheme was for £3OO, but he did not think it could be carried out. Something would to be done quickly.

Several suggestions were made as to means of raising more money, among them being a gymkhana and gift sale. Eventually it was decided that the Mayor make a canvass of the district for donations and report at next Council meeting.
