DOCTOR FOR MANGAHAO.

DEPUTATION TO HOSPITAL BOARD. A deputation from the residents of Mangahad waited upon the Palmerston North Hospital Board at its meeting yesterday with regard to medical service at Mangahao. Sir James Wilson, addressing the deputation, outlined the circumstances leading up to the Board’s decision to discontinue the maintenance of a doctor at Mangahao. The Board had already incurred an expenditure since March last of £SOOO. Seeing that the subsidy which it had been anticipated the Government would pay was not now forthcoming, the Board could not possibly carry on.

Mr J. A. Nash expressed sympathy with the men at Mangahao. It was ,very serious for them to be without medical aid. '■

Mr J. K. Hornblow observed that the Government had not done what the Board had expected of it. It was manifestly unfair that the Board’s district should have to pay for a doctor for works which were a benefit other districts. Besides, only part of Mangahao was in the Board’s district.

Mr j y ones, for the deputation, said they ha<. not come there to discuss the fin am. ' ial Position. They wanted to know w. at the Board was going to do in the matter - If the Board would assist t> em - they could make their own arrai. tgoments. The chairman s *he Board would do its best, but it "mild not afford to go on losing money.’* Mr J. K. Hornblow nioved that Sir James Wilson and Me. ssrs - Nash and Murdoch be appointed a’< sub-commit-tee to further investigate matter, Mr Nash to confer with .Hon. J. G. Coates, and Mr Murdoch to' communicate the Board’s decision to the Mangahao residents. This w r as seconded by Mr H. W. Smart and carried.
