THE CRICKET COMPETITIONS.
THE OPENING MATCHES,
The first of the Haro whenua Cricket Association’s matches for the present season were played on Saturday in dull but fine weather. Considering that the teams have hardly got into their stride, the play on the whole was fair, but not. what might be expected later in the season. - Y.M.G.A. WIN EXCITING MATCH.
On the Levin ground, Shannon met Y.M.C.A., and a very exciting game followed. Y.M.C.A. knocked up 65 in their first innings, and Shannon’s reply tallied only 35. In their second knock Y.M.C.A. put together 64, leaving Shannon to get 95 to win in less than an' hour’s play. This they very nearly achieved, the score being 91 for three wickets when stumps were drawn. It was a good sporting game, and both teams deserve every credit for the spirit in which they contested it. The match was decided on first innings, Y.M.C.A. winning by 30 runs. Scores:— Y.M.C.A. Weraroa journeyed to Foxton and was defeated by the home team by 81 to 61. Foxton batted first, and after losing a wicket with the opening bqll, Morgan and Reav came together and scored freely, 40 runs being on before the. first-named lost his wicket to Pringle. Reay continued, to hit out, and had 33 opposite his name when he succumbed. Nye and Kruse, 10 each, added mseful scores. Claridge 20 and Patrick 15 were the only Weraroa batsmen to reach double figures. Scores:—

Etxras 7 Total •. 61 Reay took six wickets for 30, Morgan one for 18, and. Higgins two for 6. Foxton scored 67 in; their second innings, Westwood 19, Reay 14 and Walls 11, Patrick and Claridge five wickets each doing all the bowling.
