OVERCROWDED INSTITUTIONS.

“During the period between January 31, 1921, and January 31, 1922, every institution of correction in California suffered a large increase'in inmates, according to a report just issued by the State Board of Charities and Correction. The report shows the population of insane asylums and prisons suffered one of the most marked increases in the history of the States On January 31 last there were .11,110 inmates in the State asylums, and 1449 inmates in the schools for feeble-mind-ed. This gives a total of 12,549 mentally afflicted that are being cared for. The number of inmates in the State asylum on January 31 was 494 in excess of that of one year ago, and in the schools for the feeble-minded the increase, was 155. The State prisons show a very marked growth, there being 1342 more felons on January 31 last than one year ago. The reform schools for minors showed an increase of 90, there being 882 inmates in the institutions.”—San Francisco Chronicle, February 26, 1922.

Then what about the Prohibitionists’ promises that Prohibition would empty all the gaols and asylums? Seems to be all the other way! Vote Continuance! 16
