BEAUTIFUL SHANNON.
UNIQUE SCHEME TO RAISE FUNDS,
APPROVED BY BOROUGH COUNCIL.
At Tuesday’s meeting of the Shannon Borough Council, Cr. Hyde moved that a committee of councillors be set up to raise the sum, of £SO for the purpose of upkeep of beautifying work and maintaining. Cr. Spencer seconded the m'otion, which was carried.
The following committee was set up: The Mayor and Crs Hyde, Spencer and Hook, who will go into a scheme for raising the necessary money.
The committee, which is to raise funds to improve and maintain the cemetery, recreation ground and beautifying plots in the borough, met on Wednesday afternoon, there being present the Mayor and Councillors Spencer and Hyde. Cr. Hyde submitted a scheme which met with the approval of the committee, and ha's every prospect of being successful, the, boys of Standards 4, 5 and 6 at the local school to be the candidates. The different parties will each have their representative, Liberal, Independent, Liberal-Labour and Reform, and also one lad to represent Continuance and / one Prohibition. Each boy will have 'a committee of ten others to assist him with, his campaign. The candidates and their committees will each be supplied with a book of fifty tickets, with the name and party of the candidate and the names of his committee printed thereon. Tickets will be sold at sixpence each and will represent one vote. Each child who sells fifty tickets will receive a prize. Tihe value of the prizes will be increased in proportion to tickets sold, and the winning candidate will also receive a substantial prize, also the candidate who tops the poll on the Licensing vote. The progress of the parties will be reported in the News each issue and thrown on the screen at the Pictures each evening. The campaign is expected to open on Mfrnday, October 30, and the final count up and prize-giving will be held on Saturday, November 11. On Saturday, October 4, the candidates and their committees will be the guests of the proprietors of the Maoriland pictures. , ,
The business men of the town so far consuited have expressed their willingness T to give prizes, and it is expected that the costs of the contest will be very small. The object for which the funds are being raised is indeed a worthy one for many of us do not often x wander far from our little town, and to have nice clean grounds and reserves to sit in and take our children to in the summer days to come, apart, from having these places pleasant to look upon, must certainly add to the pleasure of our everyday life, and will help eventually to make our town the pretty business centre that it is dcs tined Wo become. The method of raising the money is also unique and will cause considerable amusement and perhaps forecast the way the voting will he at the forthcoming general election. The News wishes the scheme every sucess, and venture# to say that the receipts will be beyond expectation.
