At the May carnival in New York, Miss Billie Burke, horn in England, and married to an American theatrical
producer (Mr Zeigfeld, of The Follies, proprietor of the New Amsterdam Theatre, New York), was voted “Queen of
the Cinema” in a popularity contest which incidentally raised £30,000 to aid the poor. The official figures of
the votes are: Billie Burke, 472,860; Mary Carr, 431,160; C. Binney, 65,500. Mary Picklord was sixth with 15,265.
Edward Earle was voted the most popular male star with 12,280 votes, while Charlie Chaplin was fifth with 2970,. and Jackie Coogan, the child 1 prodigy, seventh with 2890. The votes
| were auctioned at one - dollar each, j The surprise of the contest, was the | support given to Mary Carr, an elderly, grey-haired mother of seven j fine children, with “a smile that wins | the heart."
