THOUSAND CHICKENS DESTROYED.

FIRE AT POULTRY FARM

A fire occurred about 1 o’clock this morning af Mr G. Webb’s poultry farm in Kawiu Road East, near Levin,-re-sulting in the loss of between 900 and 100 Q chicks. The chicks were located in 11 mechanical brooders contained in a large brooder house measuring 60ft by 151't. The brooders are heated by lamps which are burning continuously, and it is surmised that one of these exploded, causing the conflagration. An alarm reached the Fire Brigade, which soon reached the scene. A connection was- made with the water supply, but it was not used. The firemen, however, did all possible to save further lose. The brooder house, stock, etc., was uninsured, and Mr Webb is a loser to the extent of about £3OO, the chicks alone being valued at £l5O.
