At many of tlie principal tracks' in j America there are races at distances j unusual in these lands. A distance j
favoured is 8£ furlongs, and at J Churchill Downs (Louisville, Ky.), on [ May 22, a horse named High Cloud (by Ultimus) made a world’s record of 1.30 for 7£ furlongs. This clipped 1.1 1-5 off the previous American best.
High Cloud was credited with cutting out the first' quarter-mile m 22 3-5, half-mile in 46 3-5, 6 furlongs j in 1.11, and 7 furlongs in 1.23 3-5, Tuesday, August 1, was the equine birthday, when every horse had a year tacked on to its age. _
Several Southern owners are con- 1 templating racing in Australia in the spring, but, nothing definite has yet been decided. The Te Kuiti R.C, made a loss of £515 on last season’s working. Government taxation absorbed £1648 13/ of the receipts. The Masterton R.C. made a loss o! £716 on their last spring meeting, and £ls 18/ on their autumn fixture, but their farm account showed a profit of £lB6 11/. It is stated that Captain J. Gage Williams has been appointed tp succeed Mr R. B. Lusk as judge at the Wellington Racing Club’s meeting.
