RUGBY UNION MEETING.

SHANNON AND THE REP MATCH.

The weekly meeting of the.. Horowbenua Rugby Union was held on Tuesday, the members present being Messrs.' E. J. Nash (qhairman), W. Bevan, H. w’. Percy, L. Dixon, F. Whibley, M. Winiata. W. Thomson, and L. S. Carmichael.

Mr Mason, representing the Shannon Football Club, waited on the Union, and said he and the treasurer ;Mr Moynilibn) had interviewed Mr Nash, the Union president, at Palmerston North regarding the playing of the Taranaki match. It was considered a Wednesday match would not be such a success as a Saturday hut it had now' been discovered .that ad the rep. games would be played mi Wednesdays. In that event, Shannon was quite willing to take the Taranaki match, but asked, on behalf of the Shannon Club, to take full charge of the. game, and make all the arrangements. After the match the Shannon Club would prepare a balance-sheet and. submit it to the Union.

■Th« ■: halt man said the Union was not too financial,, and was looking to making .a prpfit.on the game seeing it was with Taranaki. As the tiaxmilla and Mangahao works would be in full swing on Wednesdays,, he.dici not see how a profit Was to be made. Mr Mason said on the day of tire match die flaxmills would cloee early,, and certain number of men would bo off shift at Mangahao whether it was a Wednesday or Saturday. He considered the Union, under the proposal he was making, would not suiter any loss.

Mr Bevan; said if the Shannon supporters were good enough sports to back up the Shannon Club if it controlled the game, they should do the earne if the Union did so. He did not agree with the proposal. ■the chairman thought the Union would be losing its identity if it allowed what was suggested. Mr Whibley considered the offer from Shannon was a good one, and should be accepted. He moved to that effect.

Mr Mason pointed out that Shannon had to nmlce a success of the match ,{ 0 justify other country districts being given games, and also possibly getting a match for Shannon under the combined Unions, should that take place. Mr Mason mentioned that if the proposal was granted a programme of entertainment was being mapped out for the visitors, and the business people and residents generally were prepared to work and make it a success.

Mr Percy considered that the granting of the* proposal would create a precedent, bid he would second the motion.

Mr Thomson opposed the motion, as it was creating a dangerous precedent that would act like a boomerang. The New Zealand Union did not hand over the control of a rep. game in Wellington to any club, and this Union should follow that lead. , -

Mr Whibley repeated he was strongly In favour- of the motion, me Union would mot suffer a loss, and there was the probability of a profit. The motion was then put and lost.

Mr Mason stated further that he had authority for saying that the Shannon Club and the Shannon supporters would carry out the entertainment programme just the same as if they had got control of the, game. (Hear, hear.) They would work then hardest to make the match a success. (Applause.) It was decided, on Mr Thomson s motion, that Messrs. Mason and W. Moynihan, of Shannon, be appointed to work in conjunction with the Management Committee in controlling the Taranaki - Horowhenua rep. match next Wednesday.

Mr Percy was appointed manager of the Horowhenua rep. team, arid that he, with members of the committee and Messrs. Mason and Moynihan are to meet the visiting team on arrival at Shannon. The secretary reported that. he had forwarded to Taranaki the names oi Messrs. W. Thomson, C. Burrows, T. Parata and J. Sciascia as referees for the match.

WAIRARAPA MATCH AT LEVIN. The 1 Wairarapa Rugby Union forwarded the itinerary of the tour about to' be undertaken by their team. The team would leave on August 9 for Hamilton, returning south to Levin on August 23, and meet Horowhenua. The) touring team would consist of not less than 25.

' Mr.Whibley moved that this match be set down for Foxton. The Waira?apa team would be coming from Wanganui, and it would not be out of their way to go to Foxton. Mr Thomson seconded pro forma. H© would like to have some information on the Foxton. ground. From what he) had seen of the ground, it was npt flt-.for a rep. match, as there Was fern growing Inaids area and the lines wanted marking. ■ .Mr .WMtoey said the, ground would
