The announcement yesterday of Mr

The announcement in the last issue of the Shannon News of Mr E. Newman’s impending retirement from the political arena was the first public intimation of the fact. It was followed immediately by the announcement of a candidate who is stated to have the endorsement of the Reform Party. This is Mr Joseph Linklater, Chairman of the Kairanga County Council, and <a member of -the Foxton Harbour Board. Mr Linklater is a prominent, figure in local government an Palmerston, and is a farmer with considerable holdings at Milsom’s Line and Pohangina. In this issue he publicly declares his intention of contesting the Manawatu seat at the General Election'. The Foxton Herald states that for some time past Mr Ed. Newman’s health has not been satisfactory, and his medical advisers have warned him to take a complete rest from public activities. He took the earliest possible opportunity of conferring with his supporters and laid the facts before them. A meeting for this purpose was held at Foxton Jast Monday and representatives were present from all parts of the Manawatu electorate. A motion of appreciation oi Mr Newman’s faithful services was passed, and regret expressed at his retirement. Mr J. Linklater, chairman of the Kairanga County Council and chairman of the Foxton Harbour Board, was nominated as Mr Newman’s successor and liis nomination unanimously approved. Mr Gordon Elliot was unanimously elected chairmen of the Electoral executive committee.

The Palmerston Times says Mr Linklater’s decision to enter the political arena comes as the result of several requests by deputations front all parts of the electorate.
