We learn that a cabinetmaking and joinery factory is about to be started in Shannon with a view to supplying joinery between Otaki; and Palmerston North. The promoters contend that in view of the price at, which lit can be produced, little is to be feared from outside competition. I Residents of Shannon and district, are given a final reminder of the Community Sing to be held this evening in the Druids’ Hall. The “sing” is beitig organised by the Labour Party in aid of the Russian Famine Fund, which is a worthy object. The event is causing much interest in Shannon, and a large attendance is anticipated, Mr Bishop will act' as leader. The ; “Smg” will, commence at 7.30 p.m.

Some misunderstanding appears to exist among Shannon ratepayers in; respect to the levy in connection with the loan of £4500 for the housing scheme. We have been asked to point out that it is only a formal matter: The two-fifths of a penny in the £1 on rateable property mentioned in the Special Order is not to be charged to the ratepayer, but is only given by the Council by way of security for the loan, the purchasers of the houses under the scheme repaying the interest and principal of the loan.

The annual meeting of shareholders ol the Shannon Co-operative Cash 't rading Co. was held in the Maorilaud Theatre last evening, Mr Gustoisen presiding. The chairman in his report dealt with the business of the past year, and after a lull discussion the report and baTance-sheet were adopted. The chairman made a statement in regard to the claim made by the company on the Government in respect of the former’s account for goods supplied to a Mangahao contractor, since insolvent. He stated it was hoped a Parliamentary Committee would be set up to Investigate the matter, and that the company would get just treatment from the Government. ,
