SHANNON CRICKET CLUB DANCE.

The Shannon Cricket Club held their annual dance in the Druids” Hall on Friday evening, when there, was a lair attendance. Mr W. Quarrie officiated as M.G. The* floor was in splendid condition, and those present spent a most pleasant evening. The music was in the capable hands of Messrs. Spencer and Mcrwood.

During an interval Mr Harold Hook, president of the Horowhenua Cricket Association, took the opportunity of presenting the Hugh Hall Shield to the captain of the Shannon Club, the trophy having been won by them during the past season. In congratulating the club on winning the shield, Mr Hook mentioned that the Shield was presented for competition by the late Mr Hugh Hall, who was always recognised as a real good sport, having presented several trophies to different sporting bodies. He stated the competition had been keenly fought to the end of the season, and no one knew the issue until the last match. Seven teams had competed altogether, four from the northern end, viz., Weraroa, Levin, Whitanui and Shannon, while in the southern were two Otaki teams and Te Horo. Both ends played matches among themselves, the winners being Te Horo and Shannon respectively, who played off, the latter winning. He said Shannon had now won the Shield on four different occasions, and should Shannon win it again it will become their own properly, lie also mentioned that Mr Stewart, of the Public Works Department, won the bowling average for the season, and Mr 1L Mer. wood was the most successful batsman, with an average of 32. Mr Grainger, captain of the club, in replying, hoped that young players would take an inteerst in the game, which would help to stimulate the „ sport. He said the club hoped to be able to put an A and B team in the field next season. Also, he hoped another club would win next season, so that the Shield competition could be kept going. In the event, of Shannon winning the Shield outright, he believed a good sport was likely to appear on the horizon who would donate a trophy to take its place. He informed the gathering that Mr Murdoch had presented the club jwith a ha 11 " during the season.
