SHANNON BOROUGH COUNCIL.

BUSINESS AT LAST MEETING

The Mayor presided at a meeting of the Borough Council on Tuesday evening, all the members being present. A letter was received from Mr Shailer stating that the planing of a hedge around the plot in Plimmer Terrace was not in his contract, but he had considered it necessary, and had done the work and found the trees gratis. —lt was decided that a letter of appreciation be sent to Mr Shailer. Mr Jay applied for permission to collect garbage in the borough.—it was considered that this would be appreciated by many of the residents, and the application was granted. The Power Board wrote asking that the roll be brought up to date, and that ..the-Town Clerk accept the position of returning officer at the coming ballot on the loan proposal.—Left to the Town Clerk to attend to.

A telegram was received from Mr Newman, M.P., congratulating the Council on having the £4500 loan for dwellings granted,- and wishing them every success.—Letter of thanks to be sent to Mr Newman for his efforts in the matter on behalf of the Council.

Cr. Murray moved that a loan of £2OOO be raised for street work. This was seconded by Cr. Butt. Considerable discussion followed, and Cr. Murray, in replying to how he proposed to use the money, said that water tables could be. cleaned, and the cutting on the East Road widened. In fact, a list of work could be drawn up for the money to be spent on. Cr. Gardener said he considered that to raise the money now would be foolish, especially for work of a temporary nature. The gutters would soon be 1 bad again, but the loan would be upon us for years.

The Mayor though it better to wait until the loan for water and sewerage was raised, and add the amount on to that, as any work done now would ce cut up for the laying of pipes.

Cr. Fargher: It is better for us to concentrate on water and sewerage and carry that through. The councillors agreed that work of a temporary nature would be foolish, and thought it better to wait until 'water and sewerage were accomplished facts, and then tar-seal the main streets and footways.

After (hearing the discussion, Cr. Murray withdrew his motion. The Library Committee arranged to purchase a quantity of new books immediately.

Cr. Hyde asked if there was any reason why the bridge over Stansell's drain and the kerbing and formation of the path round the beautified plot could not be gone on with: The money for this was on the' estimates, and he could see no reason why the work could not be done now.

The Roads Committee was asked to proceed with the. work at once. Cr. Hyde moved that the Road Committee approach Mr McKegg with a view.'"to. running the overflow from his artesian well into the sump in front of Meagher's shop, and so keep it clean. . This was carried.

Amounts totalling £72 were passed for payment.

Mrs Kersey had the misfortune to break her arm recently, but is now progressing favourably. It is rumoured that Mr Watlerston intends using, part' of his new premises, when completed, for up-to-date tea and luncheon rooms! He is having electric light, with fans for summer and heaters for winter, fitted in readiness for the completion of the Mangahao works, and he may go to the extent of having tea gardens on the roof.

The Cemetery Committee will meet on Monday with a view to making further improvements at the cemetery. There have been several cases of diphtheria in Shannon lately. Mr J. McPherson's chield Was taken to the hospital suffering from pleurisy, making the fourth child taken to the hospital for treatment in the last few weeks.
