MAORIS BEAT NEW SOUTH WALES.

HOROWHENUA MEN SCORE DECISIVE .GOAL. EXCITING RUGBY. / ' II I ( ' Sydney, June 24. In the Rugby Union game the Maoris defeated New South Wales by 25 points to 22. The score consisted of four tries (two converted) 'and three penalty goals, against six tries (two converted). ' The weather was fine but cloudy, and the ground heavy. The attendance was fifteen thousand. The game was an even contest throughout, but the advantage was slightly with the Maoris, who gave a splendid display of clever football, though lacking polish in the finer points. The scores weer nine all at the interval.

In the last five minutes play was of a stirring characted. The Maoris led 20—17, but New South Wales scored and converted, assuming the lead. With a couple of minutes to go the Maori forwards, infusing tremendous sparkle into a rush downfteld, overwhelmed Mayne, who fumbled. Rangi Broughton (Horowhenua) snapped up the leather and literally galloped for the line, scoring with several hanging on to him, amid great excitement. Jacob (Horowhenua) converted on the call of time.

The Maoris were excellent. Though it is unfair to discriminate, Bell, Phillips and Jacob were perhaps the pick.
