HOROWHENUA BEATS MANAWATU
These old rivals met on the Levin Domain on Saturday under perfect football conditions, and a fast, interesting game ended in favour of Horowhenua by 11 points to 9. Once the .play settled down, a keen battle between the forwards followed and continued to ! the last. The home pack had the best of the game, but any advantage there was made up by the visitors’ backs, who showed Letter combination than the local rearguard, although there were numerous bright patches of individual back piay by Horowhenua, and on occasion they combined nicely and got in some effective work. The whole of the scoring was done in the first half. The second bout was keenly fought, with Horowhenua doing most of the attacking, and ended without any lurther scores being , recorded. The teams were as follows: —
Manawatu: Swainson, Robinson, Mullins, Bailey, Mair, Bramwell, Rose, Leader, Carroll, Anderson, Harkness, Dustin, Gothard, Galpin and Body.
Horowhenua.: N. Winiata, T. Moynihan, Moses, Wakefield, Reid, T. McDonald, Utiku, Rhodes, Sands, Robinson, Tana, R. Moynihan, Ransfield, D. Wilson and Koro. THE GAME.
Manawatu (green) lost no time in opening its scoring account, the ball being only iii play a short time when Leader got .possession about mid-field and with a great run got over and scored. The Greens made the game lively, their forwards, led by Dustin and Carroll, penetrating well into Horowhenua (red) territory. Here Swainson was given a chance at goal, and he sent the ball over the bar. Manawatu 6 —o. N. Winiata stopped another Green rush, and the lied forwards, who were now getting into their stride, took a hand and swept over the half-way line. A scrum followed near the Green quarter flag The Horowhenua hookers sent the leather out smartly and Utiku worked the' blind side by handing on to T. Moynihan. The speedy winger was jambed on the line, but passed infield to Rhodes, who was handy, and the latter dodged his way over to score for Horowhenua. 'The goaling attempt failed. - Manawatu B—3. The lied forwards attacked again ,and held the opposition in their twenty-five, where Sands marked, and his kick reached the Manawatu line. Body fumbled in taking the ball, and T. McDonald, who had followed up smartly, got possession and scored p, good try. Moses goaled, and Horowheuna led te—6. The play became fast and open, but offside work by Leeder nullified several Manawatu forward attacks. Carroll, Anderson and Galpin again charged down on the Red line, the danger being removed by powerful line-kicking by N. Winiata. Bramwell, Rose and Mullins were very active among the Green backs, initiating several passing bouts, which broke down, however, under the solid tackling of the defence, R. Moynihan, Sands and Ransfield were prominent in the next Red offensive, which was pulled up at the Green twenty-five. The Red hookers were getting most of the ball, and repeated the performance in the next scrum. Utiku whipped out to McDonald, who sent along to Wakefield. . The. latter made a dashing run and though held up on the line, threw himself over and registered Horowhenua’s third try. The kick faield. Horowhenua 11, Manawatu 6. Carroll, Dustin and Leeder were very active among the Green forwards. The first-named led a rush right through 1o the Red goal-line, where a •knock-on spoiled a good scoring chance. Manawatu continued a, hot
attack. Rose got from a scrum, and sent his backs ,away, Mair, Bramwell and Mullins handling in turn. The attack was backed up by the forwards, Dusstin breaking away to the Horowhenua corner. Reid, Moses and Utiku staved off the danger, but the Greens were not to be denied. A scrum followed inside the Red quarter flag, and Rose again put his backs in motion. Bramwell cut in and passed to Mair, and then „to Mullins, who scored. The kick was unsuccessful and half-time sounded with Horowhenua leading by. 11—9. The second half opened with the Red forwards, breaking away over the neutral line, and Rhodes and Ransfield carried on well into Green territory, where off-side play relieved the visitors. Bramwell and Robinson opened a promising Green offensive, and moved operations to the other end. Here Utiku stoped the attack, and T. Moynihan gbt away along the touch-line. He was joined by TanaWilson and Koro, and another score was narrowly averted. Bramwell’s play was particularly good among the Green backs, and he turned defence into attack by a series of bright movements. They were well met by the defence, Moses, • Reid, McDonald and Utiku playing .very solidly. The home forwards were doing most of the attacking, and bufoke over the half-way several times. Dustin and Carroll, always in the Green van, came back with a fine effort, .taking the ball with them almost under the Red goal, where a knock-on spoiled a sure score. Anderson, Carroll and Bramwell opened a passing rush, which was progressing well , till Leeder missed his pass. R. Moynihan, Wilson and Robinson evened up, and the home backs initiated some bright passing work, Wakefield getting very near to scoring again. Mullins and Bailey sent the .play across field, the latter sprinting down the- side-line to within reach of the opposing goal. A lively forward bout followed, the Reds eventually clearing their line and play settled at half-way. ' The remainder of the game was on the 'Manawatu side of half-way, and Horowhenua was pressing an attack in the Green twenty-five when the final whistle sounded. Mr T. Parata refereed in his usual efficient style.
A curtain-raiser to the rep. match was played between Rovers 111. v. Levin District High School, the School winning after a well-contested game by 16 to 11.
