GOOD ROADS.
At the Dominion Conference of Chambers of Commerce, the Levin advocacy of support for the Main Highways Bill, on the basis of due recognition of thej claims of all local bodies (not counties only as proposed in the Bill) was approved after considerable discussion. The case as presented in detail at the conference mentioned has since been submitted to the executive of the New Zealand Automobile Union, and favourably received, the raising of revenue per medium of a tyre tax, and setting up of boards representative of the Government, Counties’ Association, Municipal Association, and motor unions for each island, being essential phases endorsed. The classification of highways has been approved, but the) suggested varying percentage basis of contributions from each body has yet to* be considered. The Automobile Union and the Gotftl Roads Association are to confer in Wellington on the 1 6th, and
after meeting the repreentatives of the Counties Association, and, it is hoped, the Municipal Association, all concerned will take part in a conference arranged by the Minister of Public Works for the 7th. As an ex-offlcer of the Waifarapa Automobile Association and actively interested; also in ,she commercial and local body viewpoint in regard to roading betterment, Mr A. C. Holms, of Levin, has been invited to participate in the conference.
