BOROUGH COUNCIL MEETS.

VARIOUS MATTERS DEALT WITH.

The usual meeting of the Borough Council was held on Tuesday evening. Cr. Gardener presided, the Mayor being absent. There were present Crs. Hook, Murray, Spencer, Hyde, Butt and Richardson. BRICK AREA MODIFIED.

The question of modifying the building by-laws with regard to the brick area was discussed, and it was eventually decided that the Engineer be' notified that it is the. intention of the Council. to alter the by-law so that buildings may be constructed in the brick area with dividing walls of brick, stone or concrete, the wall; to constinue three feet beyond the end of the rear wall and ,so form a fire screen. The by-law as it now stands states that the whole of the building must be in brick, stone or concrete, and councillors considered that this was too drastic and, would only tend to hamper the progress of- the- town. Dividing walls in brick or concrete were considered ample protection against fire.

LOAN GRANTED FOR DWELLINGS. Word was received that the Council had been granted the £4500 loan for the erection of dwellings, and also that the deputation to the Minister of Public Works had been arranged for the 13th inst. A vote, of thanks to Mr Newman, M.P., was passed for the keen interest he had taken in the matter; _. GENERAL. The Road Committee .reported that drains had been cleaned in Thompson, Levin and Sheehan Streets, and that Stansell’s drain was now receiving attention. A considerable quantity of metal had been carted for patching work, and the harness required had been purchased. Accounts totalling £93 12/4 were passed for payment, thus bringing the expenditure for the past three months up to £674 19/10.
