COUNCIL
TO PROVIDE WORK FOR SOLDIERS
The Mayor informed the Borough Council on Tuesday evening the Poppy Day funds collected in Shannon in connec-fcio with the Anzac celebiutions amounted to £l4. There was a possibility of this being increased to £2O when a redistribution of the whole of the. funds collected had been made. The money would be“6xpended in providing work for returned soldiers. He asked if the Council would not subsidise £1 for £1 the money to he spent in Shannon.
Cr. Spencer: Yes, I think that is the best thing to do. Cr. Hook considered that would be a good action, on the part of the borough.
On Cr. Spencer’s motion, seconded by Cr. Butt, it was decided that the amount received from the PoDpy Fund be subsidised £1 for £l, and that the money be expended in the borough.
Cr. Fargher: What wages will you pay?
The Mayor suggeste/l doing the work by contract-
or. Murray: That is not very definite.
The Mayor said they could leave that, over until the! money was received. When it arrived definite arrangements for its expenditure can he made.
