GOLF.
OPENING OF THE SEASON. The weather clerk was certainly very generous last Saturday when the local Golf Club opened its 1922. season. A delightful day assisted very greatly in making play on the links enjoyable, and all present, whether players or onlookers, had a very pleasant day’s outing. Although the grass on! thje fair-ways was somewhat long at Nos. 4 and 5, the greens themselves were in, splendid order, and putting was reliable. A delicious afternoon tea, daintily set out, was provided by Mrs Anderson, and the participants in the game found the refreshments most acceptable alter being once or twice round the course. The. chief event of the day was an approaching competition under sealed handicaps, and the many entrants who tried their skill at this particular part of the game, kept the officials busy wtih the tape. A great deal of interest and not a little amusement was caused as the competition progressed, but the improvement shown by various players was an indication butt this seas >:i shannon should be able to pick a team that would not bring discredit to any club. The course now being open to play, it is hoped that members will make full use of it, and endeavour to develop along the lines of improvement, so that the. many matches that are to be played will be of interest.
Already several trophies have been offered, and the competitions for these will be announced and played off from time to time.
The first medal match will be played cn June 3, and following that will be. a series of matnn.-v, right ffwough
the season,
It is hoped that players will carefully read the revised rules and try as closely as„possible to follow out these regulations. The Committee also requests that ladies, when playing, will not wear high heels that may injure the greens. The handicaps for 192-2 have notyet been fixed, but these will be published in a week or two.
For all matches, partners will be drawn, and these will be published in the Shannon News on the Tuesday preceding the Saturday on which matches are to be played. The result of the approaching competition is as follows:
Mrs Johnson Ist, with handicap subtracted, minus 26ft 4in. Mr A. Saxon, 2nd, minus 16i't. 2in. Mrs Saxon, 3rd,' minus 3ft 4in. Players are requested when visiting the links to see that all gates are kept closed.
