CONVENIENT TRAIN SERVICE.

EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTE’S PROPOSAL SUPPORTED.

The. Horowhenua branch of the Educational Institute brought before the Horowhenua County Council on Saturday a suggestion that the train leaving Wellington each day at .9.25 a.m. should be delayed two hours, which would allow it to reach Levin at 3.30 instead of 1.30, which would thus provide a convenient return service for the conveyance of secondary pupils from the northern stations. T such a service was provided, the benefit to the Horowhenua district would be very great, and in any case When the suggested post primary educational course comes into force at our schools, with Levin as the natural centre on this coast, a train at about 3.30 p.m. would be an absolute necessity for pupils from Koputaroa and other northern stations. The Institute asked the Council to support the proposal in a communication to the Railway Department. Cr. McLeavey: A very good idea. Cr. Harkness agreed, and pointed out there was no means of getting to the north end of the county in the afternoons, and one had to wait till the' evening train. The school children from the northern stations were very inadequately served by the afternoon train scry ice, and he supported

the proposed change. The chairman (Cr. Monk) reminded councillors that.the trains were run to suit the majority of the people as a rule. In this instance the school children were not the only cues to be considered.

Cr. Ryder emphasised that the proposed change would be a great convenience in another way. The pre-

sent slow train getting to Levin at 1.30 left Wellington a little after the express. If it were delayed two hours it would be suitable for people doing business in Wellington to get back home at a convenient hour. Cr. Harkness moved that Council support the proposal. This was carried unanimously. Cr. Ryder: Make the motion as strong as possible, Mr Chairman.

A copy of the motion is to be sent to Mr Newman, M.P., Mr Field, M.P., the Minister'of Railways, and General

Manager of Railways,
