FOOTBALL NOTES.

MEETING OF UNION

A meeting of the Horowhenua Rugby Union was held on Tuesday evening. The following delegates were present: Messrs. E. J. Nash (chairman), II W. Percy, W. Re van. Dixon. M. Winiata, Father Vibaud, W .Thomson and L. S. Carmichael (hon. secretary). On Mr Percy’s motion, it was decided to write the Rangitikei Union and invite them to play a match lor the Bebbington Shield at, Levin on Wednesday, May 24; also ■that. Mr Parata would witness the game, if arranged, in view of selecting the Maori team t-o> tour Australia. The Union considered the protest cf the Rovers against Tokomaru in the match last, Saturday, when it was stated the latter played a senior player, A George. It was decided that. The match he replayed at a later date, as there was a doubt as to the Tokomaru secretary having received a letter to him on the matter.

Tokomaru applied for the reinstatement of eight players as juniors. This was granted in the case of seven, but Rowlands, who played a' an emergency against Wellington B in 1920, must play as a senior: A. George was also classed as a senior player. , The sum of £5 was donated to the Morowhieinta Referees' Association. A rep. match with Manawatu was set down to be played at Levin on .!une 24 next.

It was decided to reinstate Tago, of Levin, and March Miles as junior players. R. Tahiwi, oi Otaki, was also graded junior, on the ground that he was unable to obtain a game with the senior team he played with last year.y Messrs. Nach, Dixon and Percy were appointed a classification committee.

It was decided ,lo ask the Referees' Association to delete the name of Mr T. Wehipeihana from the list of referees on account of his being a selector.

NOTES ON i’HE GAMF

Hui Mai is so far shaping very well, and looks like having a: big 'say ra the senior competition. They have the assistance of Tana and P. and K. Ransfteld, of the defunct Kuku club, who should be a useful addition ta tlie green and whiles.

Rangi Broughton is a tower, of strength to the Weraroa vanguard, and is well -supported by D. Cole and a few others. A younger member of the Broughton family looks like turning out well.

W. Wakefield, who played back for Shannon last, season, lias joined, up withf Weraroa. He has plenty of pace if given a chance. Both Ferris and Heremaia, the Weraroa and Wanderers full backs' in last Saturday’s game were very safe, but there was a disposition on the part of both to hang on to the bait too long. To be collared with the ball, a full back lakes ihe risk of serious trouble for his team.

Last Saturday’s game seemed to indicate that the Wanderers were last getting into their stride. Their back play was good, Ilannan, Toddy McDonald and Tom Winiata being responsible for some nice attacking work. Carmichael and Rangi Williams are ia, dashing pair on the wings, and some scoring should come from litem this season. Rangi's elevation to senior rank - is well deserved.

'Nepia Winiata, ■ centre, has donned the black jersey once more, and gave a taste of his old quality on Saturday by cutting in once or twice and upsetting the opposition arrangements.

The Shannon Club is playing a long way ‘below last year's form, and requite a good shaking up to. get them going properly. They have the material, and only, organisation is inquired to see the' wearers of the maroon jersey at their best again. Tokomaru having stepped down from senior to junior rank, should be a .big factor in deciding the latter competition. Foxton has the services of several of its juniors of the- last two seasons in its senior team tills year. The class of junior football in Foxton during 1920 and 1921 was of a superior standard, and if the present seniors can reach that grade of piay they should not go far wrong. The Weraroa pack looks like being a bit light in the scrum, and should make up the difference in the toose, open work. They have a good lead in this in Rangi Broughton, who, has

no superior in this department on tlie coast,

The Wanderers’ pack includes three ex-Kuku players in Koro,, 11. White and Holder, and the forwards should be well up to tho-e of former years. Jacob was going strong last Saturday, and broke away and scored twice. A dangerous obstacle in the shape

of a quantity of large stones was to he seen on the playing area of the Domain on Saturday. Should any of the players have fallen on Them there was tiie chance of serious injury. In the interests of the players the'Union should see that stones are not left on the playing areas in the future.

INSURANCE AND SUBSCRIPTIONS

The l-lorowhenua Union has issued the following circular to clubs: “I have been instructed to inform yen that Rule 17 in ‘Rules of Club o-n----lests’ which reads as follows, will be strictly enforced this season. rule 17: ‘All players must be /financial with ilieir clubs by May 31, by which time all secretaries of clubs must send in 1o the hon. secretary of the Union all duplicate receipts. Players may become financial by paying arrears of subscriptions to any member of the committee or to the referee of a match.’ !n addition to club subscriptions the secretaries of clubs must, collect 2/C pet-man independent, of grade, for insurance, which is compulsory and.is to ■ c collected by clubs. The benefits derived from scheme for players is Rule. of ‘lnsurance against Accident’ fund amendment to read as follows: —
