PAYMENT OF ROYALTY.
FOR CARRIAGE OF METAL OVER
SHANNON ROADS
Some discussion ensued at the meeting of the Horowhenua County Council on Saturday when a letter was read from the Shannon Borough Council stating that it had confirmed an agreement with the Horowhenua Council to pay 3d a yard for metal carted over the borough roads. Cr Broadbelt said this appeared to be establishing a dangerous precedent.
Cr. McLeavey asked why the County Council should have to pay this royalty when the Shannon Borough Council’s traffic went over the county roads. The chairman pointed out that if a local body damaged another’s roads it was required to pay for the repairs. The question was asked, whether 3d a yard was a fair thing. The Shannon borough contended that the motor lorry cut the roads up seriously.
Cr. Harkness insisted that Shannon traffic often damaged county roads.
The chairman: Well, if it does, you should prove it and we can make them pay for it.. Cr. Broadbelt: I presume that if this is paid we can smash away as hard as we like.
Cr. Ryder considered that 3d a yard was not a large sum, and that it would work out approximately at wliat the County Council would he required: to pay for the damage it would certainly cause by carting hundreds of yards of metal.
Eventually it was agreed that the royalty be paid.
