FARMERS’ SCHOOL.
SYLLABUS OF LECTURES
The complete syllabus has now been prepared by Mr W. J. McCulloch, manager ol the Central Development Farm, of the course of instruction to be Imparted to tanners attending the school to be opened on tbe farm on Monday, April 24. It shows that the lour days and part ol the filth will be fully occupied. On the Monday evening the school wili he formally opened, and among those who have signified their Intention of being present are Mr. ,W. it. Field, M.P., Mr D. W. Matheson, Mayor of Levin, and Dr. Reakes, Director of Agriculture. It is hoped that the Hon. Mr Nosworthy may also find time to be present. Immediately afterwards there will be a lecture on herd testing by Mr Singleton, of the Dairy Division of the Department of Agriculture, and at 8 o’clock next morning work will start again and be continued until 9 o’clock at night, and so on until Friday night. On Saturday morning it is expected that most of those present, especially those who have come from a distance, will be departing, so, in order that farmers may have an opportunity of exchanging views and expressing opinions on the value of the lessons learnt, a smoke concert will be held on the Friday evening as a wind-up" to the school. It may be mentioned that, a number of the lectures will he illustrated with lantern slides, and, in order to facilitate this, these lectures have as far as possible been arranged to take place in the evening. The complete syllabus is as under:—
MONDAY, APRIL 24. 6.30 p.m.: Opening of School. 7.30 p.ni.: Herd Testing (Mr W. M Singleton). TUESDAY, APRIL 25.
8 to 9.30 a.m.: The Feeding ol Dairy Cows (Mr A. H. Cockayne).
9.40 to 11.10 a.m.: Lime and Liming (Mr F. W. Greenwood) .
11.20 to noon: Farm demonstration— Types of Ploughing (Mr W. J. McCulloch). 1 to 3.45 p.ni.: Veterinary demonstration—The Cow in Health and Disease (Mr .W. T. Collins).
4 to 5 p.m.: Principles of Animal Breeding as illustrated by Poultry (Mr F, C. Brown). 7.30 to 0 p.m.: The Grass Lands of New''Zealand (Mr E. B. Levy). WEDNESDAY, APRIL 26.
8 to 9.30 a.m.: Draught Horses (Mr VV. T. Collins, M.R.C.V.S. and Mr H. E. B. Watson). 9.40 to 11.10 a.m.: Principle t of Pasture Establishment (Mr E. B. Levy). 11.20 to noon: Farm demonstration —Cultivation of Root Crops (Mr W. J. McCulloch). 1 to 3.45 p.m.: Field instruction in Farm pastures.
4 to 5 p.m.: Summer and Winter Feeds lor Dairy Cows (Mr A. m. Cockayne). 7.30 to 9: Farm Insects (Mr D. Miller). THURSDAY, APRIL 27. 8 to 9.30 a.m.: Manures and Manuring. 9.40 to 11.10 a.m:: Farm Practice in the Control of Weeds (Mr A. H. Cockayne). 11.20 to noon: Farm demonstration —Mole Draining (Mr W. J. McCulloch).
1 to 5 p.m.: Types ol Dairy CowBreeds—Friesian, Jersey, Shorthorn, Ayrshire and Red Poll (Association Demonstrators).
7.30 p.m.: Lucerne (Mr F. W. Greenwood).
FRIDAY, APRIL 28, 8 to 9.30 a.m.:. Field instruction in Farm Crops. 9.40 to 11.10 a.m.: Field instruction in Farm Crops. , f 11.20 to noon: Farm demonstration— Ensilage Making (Mr W. J. McCulloch) .
1 to 2.15 p.ni.: Swine Husbandry (Mr K. W- Gorringe).
2.30 to 3.45 p.m.: Wool Classing for Farmers (Mr J. G. Cook). 4 to 5 p.m.: The Care of Milk (Mr A. A. McKenzie).
6.30 to 7.30: Agricultural Clubs and Farmers’ Competitions (Mr J. W. Deem).
SATURDAY, APRIL 21). Tree planting for Farmers (Mr '1 Page).
