The shooting season will open on May 1. Licenses will be required for native game this year, but whether separate licenses will be necessary lor native and imported game is not, yet finally decided. Mr J. A. Nash, M.P., Mayor of Palmerston, states that Mr McVilly, the General Manager of Railways, informed him that he would press n matters connected with the railway deviation as quickly as possible, so as to help the Council with its gas works and electric light- station sites.

While wandering among the sand hills almost opposite the wreck of the Hyderabad on Sunday, a couple of Foxton residents found the lid of a coffin, rough hewn from totara timber. The lid had been fastened with copper nails. Nearby were a few bones,' a button and some decayed fabric. The locality is probably the site of a Maori settlement of many years ago.

A bud iii the saleyards these days, and there are always two or three at the Levin sale, culs a melancholy figure standing dejectedly in his solitary pen until the auctioneer has disposed of everything else on the grounds. There he is, ahd nobody wants him particularly, certainly not to feed him. The auctioneer, may endeavour to infuse a little enthusiasm into his raucous tones, but the effort is never infectious. Yesterday a mountain of beef in a Holstein skin went for £l and immediate petting.

The Wairarapa News says: “Mr A. C. Holms, well known in public life in the Wairarapa, and almost successful at the last general election as an Independent candidate in winning the Masterton seat, has, we i understand, been approached, asking hint to contest the Wairarapa seat. We further understand that he is not in a position to definitely disclose his political intentions at present.” Fashion’s demand for “solt-hand-ling cloths” is an important factor in keeping down the price of crossbred wool. This is one of the matters discussed in the annual report of the British-Australian Wool Realisation Association. The directors oT that organisation state that their stocks o: merino- wool will be exhausted before the end of this year, and they believe that the supply of fine wools will then be unequal to the demand.- Shorlage and high prices may force the consumers to turn again to the crossbred wools that New Zealand supplies.

The inquest concerning the death of Thomas George Miller, who was picked up in the street on the morning of the second day of the last Woodville races, and died subsequently hi the Rahiatua Hospital, was concluded at Rahiatua by Mr J. D. Wilson, District Coroner. In giving Ids evidence the Corcrfi-er said he had. carefully considered the evidence. Hu returned an open verdict that- the deceased died from hemorrhage resulting from a fractured skull, there beingno evidence to show how the fracture was caused. Thfe Coroner reviewed the evidence, and said in Ills opinion the man was drunk, when he was allowed to leave the Masonic Hotel. Although no one saw him, it is reasonable to suppose that he fell while in that condition, and was fatally injured.
