When Sir John 43addcley, the new Lord Mayor, was presented to Mr Justice Darling (in the absence of the Lord Chief Justice), at the Law Courts, the Recorder of London said that he was the eldest of a “ good old-fashion-ed family of IS.” Mr Justice Darling replied that he hoped this might do something to destroy the ancient tradition that 13 was an unlucky number, since it could not be unlucky to preside over the deliberations of those who governed the greatest and finest city in the world.
