THE MAORILAND PICTURES.

“THE BRANDED ‘ WOMAN’’-~WED-

NESDAY

The outstanding features of “The Branded Woman,” due at the Pictures to-morrow, are the personality and fine acting of Norma Talmadge. Her characterisation is one of contrasts; she does remarkable work. As the guileless young girl, fresh from refined college training and clean environment, she is as sweet as an orchard breeze. Thrust into the fetid atmosphere of the so-called smart set, I she tellingly depicts the startling awakening of maturity, while as tiie sweet, pure-minded wife carrying a secret sorrow which she dares not tell her husband, she is a revelation—she is abnormal in her exceptional ability. Her performance lifts the picture right out of the commonplace into the class of perfect entertainment.

FRIDAY’S OFFERING. On Friday there will be screened “The Purple Cipher,” a thrilling story of mystery and adventure set in the unsolved Chinese underworld ol ’Frisco. Four persons are informed that they .will meet their death at a certain hour on a certain day, the mysterious message being signed with the fatal symbol of one of the strongest of the Tongs that rule in the Eastern underworld of the West. Following this startling information, sure enough death dogged the footsteps of those who had been marked by the secret deadly Tong, it is a story of dark deeds and queer twisted conspiracy silhouetted against that bizarre and baneful spot, ’Frisco’s Chinatown, and furnishes Earle Williams with some of his best opportunities. The third episode of the serial will also be shown.
