The Rangitikei Racing Club have beon permission to reduce the stakes for their meeting next month; Although nothing has yet been, definitely decided on, there is every probability that Desert Gold will next season be mated with Absurd. The champion mare is at present in foal to the recently imported sire King John. Insurrection was allowed to drop out of his Canterbury engagements, and was railed straight through to Dunedin. This horse is to be in better form than he has ever shown previously, and is sure to be well supported in the principal handicap in Dunedin. Palestrina is also given a great chance in the Dunedin Cup. Seven yearlings arc being sent to Sydney by Mr T. H. ILowry for the Sydney autumn sales the lots being: ch f by Finland—The Hague, bay filly by Finland—Belfry, ch £ by Finland or Egypt—Mint (imp.), Tbr f by Finland — D 'Oro, dam of Moorland, bay colt by Finland—Landrail, blk colt, full brother to Bobrikoff, by Finland—Gossip, and a bay colt by Finland —War Talk. Mr B. L. Joll has had an unusual experience in the two-year-old races at the Takapuna meetings. Last season in the spring his fdly Annorel looked to have the Cambria Handicap at her mercy, when she ran off the courso at the home turn, eventually finishing third. On Wednesday Ms gelding The Dunce was out by himself in the Hobson Handicap when he did a similar performance, but got second. It is not often such a happening occurs to an owner twice on the one course with different horses. The result of: tho Hatvera Stakes, and Egmont Stakes shows Gloaming up in a most favourable light, for he appears to have had no difficulty in defeating Thespian berth o,ver the six furlongs and the mile, and it would now look as if Thespian was lucky to beat Mr Greenwood's champion in the A.R.C. Islington Plate. In the last-named event, Gloaming was certainly ridden a peculiar race, but Thespian always appeared to be going easily in behind The Hawk and Gloaming and able to run up to them when his rider wanted him. Since then, however, differently ridden, Gloaming has beaten Thespian at six furlongs, a mile, and a mile and a-half, and is fully entitled to retain his title us ehampion.
