THE MARKET IMPROVES.
f RISING VALUES AT LEVIN SALE. The activity in the stock market a week ago accounted for a big entry, of sheep and pigs and a fair yarding of cattle at the Levin sale, and the attendance of buyers was the largest for a long' time. The bidding was much brisker in all sections, and an excellent tone throughout. The sheep section comprised all classes, and out of the extensive entry not one lot was passed in. All the fats sold well, lambs particularly so, and these commanded good competition and remained firm all through. The best line reached 22/6, and others 18/6, 17/9 and 15/7, whilst a pair of pet lambs brought 23/ and another pair of extra prime lambs reached 30/. Fat ewes and wethers sold at about last sale rates, the former making up to 15/6, and the latter to 16/7. Good breeding ewes were in keen demand, one specially fine line bringing 19/6 and another 17/, with the inquiry good. There was a good yarding of store ewes and lambs, and the sale was brisk for all lots at advanced rates. Cattle prices also showed an improvement, especially for fats and good forward steers and store steers, the advance being fully £1 per head all round, whilst empty store cows improved 5/ to 10/ per head. A firm market prevailed for all classes of pigs, porkers reaching to £3 1/, and baconers £3 6/ to £3 10/, stores to £l, and weaners to 11, 12/6 and ft/. These rates are a substantial advance on those of two or three weeks ago, and the market appears more stable than has been the case for several weeks. , Sheep.—Fat lambs 15/7, 17/9, 18/6 to 22/6 and 23/ and 30/, the two latter prices for specially selected lots, forward lambs 12/3 to 14/, mixed-sex lambs- in good condition 10/ to 12/10, fat ewes 13/3, 14/, 14/6 to 15/3, a special line of eight fats realising 22/; fat wethers 15/9 to 16/7, fat and forward ewes 10/, well-conditioned 6-tooth breeding ewes (a good'lot) 19/6, another line 17/ to 15/6, and down to 11/6; fat and forward ewes 11/3 to 11/6, and culls down to 2/7. Fair conditioned store lambs made from 5/1 to 7/2 and 10/10. Cattle.—Fat cows £3, fat bullocks £6 to £7, empty forward cows 30/ to £2 5/, stores 10/ to 25/, store and forward steers 36/ to £2 15/, good twoyear steers £3 10/, good three-year steers £4 5/, small dairy heifers in calf £4 8/, vealers 14/ to 25/.
