GRAVES DAMAGED BY STOCK. ; DISTRICT RESIDENTS COMPLAIN.Mr W. A. Lankshear, Tokoiuaru, vrote the Shannon Borough Council m Tuesday evening, stating that u fsid recently appeared in the press hjat some oi the councillors were m avoiu' of approaching the various )lot-holders of. Shannon cemetery vith a view to persuading them to ieep their plots in order. This, the writer stated, was a very laudable suggestion, hut one which would need more encouragement than open jates supply. Last Sunday week on asitmg the cemetery he iound ample evidence 01 the presence of sheep—graves trampled and all flowering plants eaten off—while on a previous occasion several cattle were the uause of broken shades, etc. In the last case, the gate had been ieit unlocked and closed so lightly.that the merest push..was required to open it, the lock being broken. Needless to say, the writer made it as secure as possible before leaving. The wish was expressed that the Council would ! give the matter some attention and ensure more care from those responsible in the future. Cr. Hyde said the lock was broken off the gate, by some person unknown, and the gate left open. Has allowed the stock to get in. ' cr. Butt: Is this just lately? Cr Hyde: Yes, just lately. Cr. Richardson said the gate was Pfrequently open lately, and he had gone across and closed it often. The Mayor: This is the most unfortunate Council in the world. The keys of the pound are lost, and now the lock of the cemetery gate is bro--1 ken off and the gate left open. Cr. Richardson: If the person who broke the lock can be found he "should be prosecuted. The Mayor: Has anyone been lie there working lately? Cr. Richardson: No. The man wire j was working there previously got tht [ key from me in the mornings anc it in the evenings. \ Cr.
