BABY ELEPHANT FOR WELLINGTON
Sydney, January 18. Four baby elephants have arrived here from India, and they are at present on show at the. Taronga Parlt Zoo. The local directors of the Zoo stale that one, oi the elephants will be sold to the Wellington Zoo, and it is therefore interesting to know that the baby elephants, averaging three years of age, are already tame enough to be fondled by the admiring school children who flock to see them. The animals were caught in the jungle in India about six months ago and they are all females. From Sydney they will go to Melbourne for a few weeks and then the authorities will set about disposing of them. The lour animals cost about £7OO. It is interesting? to note that a number ol' the Onehunga collection of lions are now in the Sydney Zoo. It is a strange fact that while Africa is the home of the lion, African collectors and zoo authorities are applying to the Sydney Zoo for lions. The difficulties and distance entailed in trapping them in Africa are so great that it is cheaper to buy lions in Australia than Tn the country of their birth.
