BUCKLAND BANK AND FLOODGATE.

A DIFFERENCE OF OPINION. A meeting of settlers interested in the constniction of the flood-gate and banks at Buckley was held alter the sale at Shannon on Wednesday. Mr R. Law, who has had the matter In hand, stated that the new floodgate had been completed. The cost was £l5O. A further £7 7/ had been spent in filling-in work. Tlie gate was working well, and if a little further banking was done most of the local water would be confined to the creek. He bad collected from the settlers the sum of £l4B, and had paid £l2O to Mr R. Easton, wlio bad the contract for the gate, and-£7 7/ for the filling. If the balance of the money agreed on by the settlers was paid, there would be a balance of £27 odd alter paying tor the banking work done, and the balance of the floodgate. This, lie suggested, should be used in continuing the bank.

Mr Geo. Peers said he objected to paying any more, because the floodgate aiid.bank bad not kept the water back to the extent expected, and the banking had not been completed. Mr Byers said he understood the bank was to be high enough to keep back the water. It had not done so, and he would not pay a further Instalment.

It was pointed out that tlie work bad not been completed, because they had not got the money, and if the sethad promised did not meet their which was purely a moral one, tlie money they bad put in, together with the payments made by the others, would be to a large extent wasted; but if the work was completed it would.be satisfactory. Mr Peers and Mr Byers left the meeting, and it was decided to try and arrange for someone to act as arbitrator and settle the difference in a way that would be satisfactory to all.
