HOROWHENUA POWER BOARD.
NOMINATIONS CLOSE NOON ‘ TO-MORROW, The first election of members of the recently-constituted Horowhenua Electric Power Board will take place on February 8, 1922, and the nominations close before noon to-morrow (Wednesday), February 1, with the returning officers in the constituent districts of the Board. The Board will comprise nine members, including three representatives of the Horowhenua County, one each from the boroughs of Shannon, Levin, Foxton and Otaki, and one eacli from the portions of Hutt and Manawatu counties that will be included in the Horo whenua Power District. Right throughout the power district a certain amount of interest is being taken in the election of he first Board, as it is recognised that much of the success of the installation, sale of power, etc., will devolve upon the first-elected members. It is necessary, therefore, that the best available men should be selected. The position, moreover, calls for special qualities in the ' members, because after all, the sale of power by the Board will be a purely commercial undertaking, and must be conducted on strict business lines to achieve the greatest* success. The value of such an nsi a nation to this district is incalculable, for cheap power and lighting mean an impetus and boon to any district, and an illustration of this is afforded by the axample of the Lake Coleridge scheme to Christchurch and the surrounding districts. Electric power in dairying, flaxmilling and other industries, and lighting in the homes, should advance this district in a manner that nothing else can do. Already candidates have been mentioned in connection with the various constituent districts, and it is probable there will be some elections. For the Horowhenua County representation, Messrs C. I, Harkness (Weraroa), G. L. Adkin (Levin), and A. A. Brown (Waikanae) have been nominated, and it is possible that before the nominations close at noon to-morrow others may be received, in which case there will be an election. The Levih and Shannon boroughs have not made any definite selections yet, but as there Is no lack of suitable candidates in either place, there should be no difficulty in getting the right men to come forward.
