LOW-DOWN THIEF.
STEALS .HIS MATE’S SWAG. SENT TO GAOL FOR A MONTH. On Saturday last. Frederick Wilson appeared before Messrs Murdoch and Gunning, J.P.’s, charged with theft of a swag valued at. £2, the property of Edward Fahey. He pleaded not guilty. Accused admitted taking the swag but said be took it to look after for Fahey, intending to give-it to him. Constable McGregor stated that the men met on the road near Otaki, Wilson having no swag. They secured two days’ work harvesting and Fahey shaved his blankets with Wilson. They then proceeded to shannon. Fahey left his swag at the Club Hotel and afterwards, while at the Albion Hotel, Wilson left Fahey. On returning for his swag the latter found it gone.. He informed the police, Avho found that. Wilson had left by the train. The police in Levin Avere communicated with, and accused Avas arrested. The Bench described the theft as a mean contemptible one, accused shoAving no gratitude for the kindness of F alley to him. He Avould be sentenced to one months’ imprisonment.
