HOLIDAY GALE IN SYDNEY.
BARQUE’S BIG FIGHT. Sydney, January 2, ' A stiff south-east gale commenced yesterday, and blew throughout the day. It increased in force, and continues, accompanied by heavy rain and rough seas. Shipping has been buffeted, and is sheltering. The gale spoiled the holiday, though the Highland Society carried out portion of its sports programme. All other sports, excepting the races, were abandoned. (Received This Day, 11.10 a.m.) Sydney, January 3. The barque E. R. Stirling, when anchored in Sydney Harbour, narrowly escaped being driven ashore in Athol Bight during the height of the storm. The vessel dragged her anchors, necessitating the captain seeking the as sistance of two tug boats, which held the ship, after a couple of hours’ struggling. The hurricane continued throughout the night. The coastline was swept by a wind bowling along at a mile a minute. Mountainous seas crashed on to the beaches, and the river bars were reported to be dangerous. Vessels were unable to enter or leave. There are signs of the weather breaking this morning, though a continuance is forecasted.
