Mr E. Richards, who underwent an operation in Palmerston last, week, is making good progress . Mr 11. Easton’s ‘little daughter is now making good progress after her recent painful accident.
The many .friends of Mrs J. R. Whyte, of Tokomaru, will he pleased to hear that she is improving in health after her recent severe illness.
Four loads of cream are coming in from Moutoa daily to the factory, each of about two tons. The season piomises to be a record one, there being abundance of feed everywhere. Mr Flyger, of tiie railway staff at Koputaroa, who has been under doctor’s treatment for some time, has now been medically examined by the railway doctor, but no report lias jet come through as to when he will bo able to resume duty.
It was stated at the Horowhenua County Council meeting on Saturday that there were instances of people outside special rating districts using water races for which they were paying nothing. The .Chairman said the position was very unsatisfactory, and these people should be made to pay a maintenance rate at ’east. The Council should control the vhole business and collect the rate. - ■
Mr H. Brown, of Makerua, returned last week from an extended visit to the Old Country. Mrs Venn, who left with Mr Brown, is remaining huEngland for the present.
The ranger (Mr G. Wat son reported to the iiorowhenua County Council that 39 head of stock had been impounded during the past month, and live offenders would appear heiore the next sitting of the Levin court tor allowing cattle to' wander. “'Hie county roads south of . Levin are remarkably free of stock,” said Cr. Monk when the report was read.
‘‘The Horowhenua Provisional Committee in connection with the hydroelectric scheme has luililied its only, and has nothing more to do,” said cr. Monk in reply to a question at the Horowhenua County Council meeting on Saturday. Cr. Harkness: ”1 am pleased to know that, and that we nave got so far.” The chairman: We have got as far as we can take it. The Board will take it up from there. When the report of a meeting held in Feilding to consider the increased cost to the contributing bodies to the Palmerston Hospital Board was laid before the Horowhenua County Council on Saurday, the Clerk (Mr smith) stated that two or three meetings of the kind had been held at Feilding, but Horowhenua had never been invited to send a representative although a contributing body. The report was received without discussion.
Mr Hunt, of Kingston Road, met with a painful accident Sast week. He was cleaning out some pig styes when his d'eet slipped on the wet boards, causing him to fall heavily on a sharp stake. No serious results were at first expected, hut towards evening the doctor had to he summoned, and he immediately ordered the sufferer to the Palmerston North Hospital. Mr Hunt..was just about to start shearing and had his sheep ready. One of the neighbours is carrying out the work for him.
News arrived here recently of the death of Mr J. Moffat, of Invercargill, father of Mr Jack' Moffat, of Shannon. Mr Moffat, sen., was one of the oldest members of the Invercargill Bar. At the age of 28 lie had passed his law examinations—something of a feat in those days—and was admitted to the Bar by the late Sir Joshua Williams. He specialised in Maori and mining law, and handled a number of important cases when the mining industry was at its height in Southland. He had been in in different health for some lime, and passed away on November 25 at the age of 59 years. He lost one son at the war, and leaves one son and daughter, who is in Sydney, to mourn his loss. >
