NEW ZEALAND MAILS

TRADE PROTEST AGAINST IRREGULARITY. \ The Council of the New Zealand ’ and Australian Agents’ a Association has called the attention of the British Postmaster-General to the unsatisfac* tory state of the mail service to New Zealand, and asked him to institute a mail service via San Francisco and Vancouver as early as possible. .As it is understood that the Union Steamship vessels are, again running to schedule from San Francisco and Vancouver, the Council suggests that these fortnightly services should be usgd and supplemented by the direct steamers via Panama, instead of the present slow mail service via Suez. It is stated that vessels carrying produce from the Dominion have lately been and are still arriving before merchants have received their bills of lading, thus causing considerable loss- through goods being put. on charges. The Council express the hope that representations' will be made by the High Commissioner for New Zealand to the proper quarter with a view to obtaining a quicker and more satisfactory homeward mail service. The experience in New Zealand is practically the same as in the Old Country, the mails arriving here at irregular - intervals, sometimes within a week of each other and at other times after a lapse of a month.
