FAREWELL SOCIAL AT MAKERUA.

The popularity of Mr Ernie Edwards was clearly shown last Friday evening when a very large number of friends gathered at the residence of Mrs T. Dalziel, Makerua, to bid him farewell. Visitors from Palmerston and Shannon were amongst those present. A bright and varied programme of songs, recitations and dancing was greatly enjoyed by all. Mr A. Birchall, in a few remarks, spoke of the high esteem in which Mr Edwards had been held by all who knew him, and expressed the regret that they all felt at his coming departure from the district. He had not only been a comrade and friend, but had been of great service to the industry in which he had been employed. By his clever patent the flax business had been benefited. On behalf of those present he presented their honoured guest with a handsome case of pipes as a small token of their esteem. Mr Edwards arose amid cheers and the singing of “He’s a Jolly Good Fellow.”.. He said he greally appreciated the kind remarks that had been made, and would value the present not alone for its intrinsic value, which was considerable, but for the spirit in which it was given. It would ever be a reminder of the seven happy years he had spent at Makerua, Which he was leaving with regret. After supper a pleasant and memorable evening was brought to a close by the singing of “Auld Lang Syne.”
