The seventeen acceptors lined up for the New Zealand Cup at Riccarton i on Saturday. It was a great betting race. Roya,l Star was a little better backed then the bracket, Sunart and while ** Starland, War ove, Isobel and Rouen were favoured m that order. Egotism and Pluto showed out early, and they led along .he straight from Warlove, Foo Chow and Almoner, with Vagabond, Esperance, Sasanof and Royal Star m close attendance. Going out of the straigh . there Was very little change, but a, the nine furlong post Almoner ran o the front, opening up a gap of two lengths from Egotism and Plu o, after whom came Bonnie Maid and Warlove,. with Royal Star and Isobel heading , the others. Almoner ( was still showing the way to Egotism a the six furlong post, and racing round the turn this was still the order, while Royal Star had moved up close to Ihe leaders. : Almoner was showing clear of Royal Star at the distance, but he was tiring, and Royal Star finishing well, won by a good length. Yagabond took second place, 100 yards from home, and beat Almoner by over a length for second place. Esperance was fourth, with Rouen, Bonnie Maid and Isobel handy. 'The winner has long been known as a solid stayer. A year ago he finished third, after getting into a lot of trouble, and being badly cut on one leg, an injury which kept him in retirement for several months. He has .been racing again since last autumn, arid he was a thoroughly seasoned horse. His win was very decisive. Vagabond put up a great fight, and was finishing well, but never looked like being nearer than second. Almoner, the outsider of the field, r.an a solid race, and just failed to see the journey out. Esperance was finishing on well alongside Rouen, Bonnie Maid and Isobel, those four all shaping satisfactorily. Sunart ran a fair race, without ever looking like a winner, while Kilgour got off badly and was always well back. Foo Chow went all right for a mite and a-half, and so did Warlove, but Starland never looked dangerous. Egotism was one of the pacemakers nearly all through, and only fell out in the straight. Her stable mate, Pluto, was in trouble a long way from borne. Penitent and Mouton, Ivanova were never near the front, but Sasanof was showing up at the home turn, though he was one of the last to finish.—Palmerston Times.
