Winning form at Otaki worked out on the first day at Masterton, when Printemps, Beloved, Probate and Paphian got into the money. Out of his last four starts, Printeinps has had three wins and a second. The son'of Autumnus is in great fettle at present.

The locally-owned .Beloved easily accounted lor the Lawn Handicap at Masterton on the first day, and cut out the mile in 1.45 4-5.

Malincourt. Toddy and Killing, who finished in that order in the hack hurdles at Masterton, were the only three to stand up to their fences. All the other starters fell.

The Bezonian colt Paphian, owned and trained by the VVeraroa mentor, A. McConnon, ran a -good second to Backsheesh in the Farewell Handicap on the first day at Masterton. Paphian has been performing particularly well siiice being started this season, and local sports will wish his owner further success. U Bomietter was an unexpected winner of the big race on the first day at Masterton. Mr colours have not beeir prominent of late, and this win should be a popular one with racegoers in all parts of this Island.

The tote turnover on the first day at Masterton w T as down £IO,OOO as compared with the corresponding day of last.year.

No less than five New Zealand Cup candidates were engaged in the Masterton Cup on Friday. Toddy, not unknown in these parts, who has been put to the jumping game, ran second in the hack hurdles at. Masterton on Friday.

The Digger, who formerly raced in the Nortli Island, won a hurdle race, at Geraldine the other day.

It is probable that the locally-own-ed and trained Paphian will be a member of the team from Levin to make the West Coast (South Island) circuit at Christmas time.. The Foxton-owned Moutoa Ivanova, now trained at Riccarton, and a candidate for the New Zealand Cup, was among the also starteds at the recent Ashburton meeting.

The Champion Plate, to be run at the Wellington Spring Meeting, contains a field of 16 runners, among them the best performers in the Dominion at the present time. The names are: Amytlias, Anomaly, Duo, Grotesque, Listowel, Maioha, Molyneaux, Rouen, Radiant Light, Sunart, Sasanoff, The Hawk, Tamatete, Vagabond, Vespucci.

Kilgour, who has been knocking at the door in his last, few starts, won the big handicap at Masterton on the second day in decisive style, the run-ner-up being the consistent Printemps. Kilgour should bear watching in his forthcoming engagements. Gold Problem over-jumped the second last obstacle in the hurdle event at Masterton on Saturday when leading the field and came down when his chance of success looked rosy.

Dainty Step notched a double .at Masterton by winning the Macara Handicap the second day. She ran disappointingly at Otaki, but is evidently striking winning f'ornv. The daughter of Lucullus should keep the opposition lively at the forthcoming Wellington and Christchurch meetings. Borealis upset calculations in the Waipipi Handicap and beat some fairly good hacks including Martial Dawn, Probate and Ruddy, and was galloping on at the finish.

The Spring Handicap was another boil-over, Passenger snatching a narrow victory from Californian. The unplaced brigade contained Beloved, Rebuff, Sweet Song and several other good sorts.

Kyoto scored in the hurdles on both days and suggests that he is a cut above the average hurdler. A maiden in Ania made a good impression in the Maiden Stakes winning: ip nice style, and April Colly'/ a daughter of Absurd, won the Cave Plate in her first start. VIOLINCELLO WINS CAULFIELD CUP The Caulfield Cup was run at the V.A.T.C. meeting on Saturday, and was won by Violincello, who was purchased in England last year for £4OOO. There were 20 starters. The winner was well placed throughout the race, and entered the straight in second position. Taking the lead at the distance, Violincello went on to win by half a length from Purser, with Lionel Attwill third. The latter raced at the head of the field for the greater part of the race. This is Violincello’s \ first win ir Australia.
