Exhibited at the Historical Exhibition recently held in Geelong was an iriginal criticism of the singing of Nellie Mitchell (Dame Neliie Melba), ! when she was io. The criticism ap{peared in the Richmond Australasian on December 11, 1869, and read as follows: .“Little Miss Mitchell, a young lady of ten years, w’ho did not content -'herself with Singing in first-rate style, “Can’t Yob Dance the Polka?” but also accompanied herself on the piano, was, we think, the gem of the evening, and rightly deserved the spontaneous encore she received, and responded to by singing “Coming Through the Rye.” It took the audience by surprise to hear such sweet notes . coining from comparatively a mere child. The incomparable Miss Mitchell, in singing “Barney O’Hea,” quite outdid her former effort. This is indeed a musical protege, and she -will, make crowded bouses whenever sh« is announced -again. \ % * r*\ -e
