COUNTY COUNCIL WORKMEN.
PROPOSAL FOR SUPERANNUATION.
When the Counties’ Association wrote informing the Horowhenua j Council on Saturday that the annual conference would be held on the 28th. indt., Cr. Harkness said he thought that the counties should take up the question of superannuation for their employees, and said there were numbers of workmen who had given the best part of their lives to the Councils, and practically had nothing for their old age. He thought something should be done for them, so that they would be comfortable after their days of activity were over. A scheme might very well extend to the clerical staffs and engineers. It was a matter for the counties’ conference to consider. Cr. Ryder asked if superannuation would make people less provident. There was that aspect of the question to consider. The chairman said he had had the matter in mind before., and thought it workable if the boroughs' in the counties were taken in. He certainly thought it was a step that should be taken, but it was for the employees to do something, as they would s naturally have to contribute to the fund. Cr. Ryder inquired about the Government officials who were now being discharged. Would they get superannuation or their money returned The chairman said he was not sure, but he presumed that those who had not reached superannuation age would have their contributions returned. In reply to a question, the chairman said in'event of a counties’ scheme, a man who left the service would have refunded the money he had paid in. The question was one for the forthcoming conference.
